Writing Workshop

Assignments – First Week

You have four assignments to complete before the next class; three of those assignments must be posted on your blog by 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, so I’ll have time to review them Tuesday night in preparation for Wednesday’s class.

The assignments are:

  1. All About Me (post on your blog)
  2. Journal #1 — My Favorite Writing (post on your blog)
  3. Resume & Cover Letter (bring hard copy draft to class next Wednesday, 9/5, for peer editing; the final draft is due the following Wednesday, 9/12 )
  4. Word of the Week — vocabulary enrichment (post on your blog; see format info in syllabus)

For assignments posted on your blog, please use the name of the assignment (e.g., “About Me”) as the title of your blog post to make it easy for me to find. Also, please include a word count for each assignment.

One of the little details I forgot to mention yesterday is that you’ll need to write at least 8,000 words for this class. There are so many assignments for this class that hitting the 8,000-word mark is not usually a problem, but you will need to track your word counts. Please list the word count on each assignment — for assignments handed in as hard copies, please put the word count in the header (below your name, date and the name of assignment); for assignments posted on your blog, please list the word count at the bottom of your post. (If you don’t know how to do a word count, ask me in class next Wednesday.)

Also, please read the first two chapters of the text, Writing for the Mass Media (6th or 7th edition) by James Glen Stovall, before the next class.

I think that’s gets us on track through next week. I’ll get a full class schedule together over the weekend and upload it and link it to the class blog.

Have a good weekend!
